I recently sent out an email to all of our Think Vitamin Members, and I thought you might find it interesting.

$9110.89 of credits for you

I spent a week with the Think Vitamin Membership team at Carsonified’s new Orlando office (I’m based in Bath, UK).

We talked about our Core Values, brainstormed a bunch of ideas, bought new Apple gear, played Minecraft and hit each other in the head with Nerf Darts (a lot).

All this meant Nick and Jim couldn’t post videos for one week.

The only fair thing to do was give credits to all of our Members that week as they didn’t get any new videos. This cost us $9110.89 but it’s definitely the right thing to do.

If you were a Member during the week of Jan 17th, you’ll see the credit appear on your next invoice. Yay! 🙂

Our Core Values

We spent a lot of our week together discussing our Core Values. These are principles that we hire and fire by, and we hold them very dear to our heart. These are what we’re all about.

I thought it’d be fun to share them with you. Feel free to email me back your thoughts.

1. We’re passionate about the Web

We believe the web is the most amazing innovation to occur in recent history and that it’s going to change the world and make it better. We’re honored and excited to be a part of this amazing industry.

2. We love serving our customers

We think it’s an honor and a joy to serve our amazing customers. We go out of our way to deliver insanely over-the-top customer service, spending extra time and effort to really make them smile.

Through our apps, email, design and conversations, we want to add a bit of delight to all our customers’ day.

3. We care about making our products accessible to everyone

We believe everyone has the right to use the web so we strive to make all our sites and communication accessible to those with or without disabilities, on as many devices as possible.

4. We support Open Web Standards

We believe the Web is meant to be open, not owned or controlled by any one entity. Using Open Web Standards is an important part of this and we’re excited to be a part of this community.

5. We invest in Design

Craftsmanship, beauty and quality really matter to us. We strive to make all our products beautiful and elegant.

6. We think work should be fun and creative

We believe people want to be creative, silly and fun at work, and that’s a really good thing.

7. A well-rounded life is important

We only work four days a week because we know our Team are smart and hard working so they don’t need five days to complete a week of work. (Who decided on a 40-hour work week anyway?) We don’t monitor when people come and go or where they work.

Working four days a week gives everyone a whole extra day to pursue hobbies, hang with their family and friends or just relax.

8. We’re pro-active

None of us wait around to be asked to fix a problem or implement a new idea. Everyone has the power and authority to use their best judgement in order to delight and serve our customers.

We take personal responsibility for our learning, schedule, productivity and we own our mistakes.

9. We’re a Family

We believe it’s important to have real and meaningful friendships with each other. We’re not just a Team, we’re a family. We watch each other’s backs, help one another whenever we can and spend time with each other having fun outside of work hours.

10. We think it’s important to be honest, friendly, open and personal

No matter what we do, we think it’s important to treat others like we want to be treated.

11. We embrace and encourage change

We’re always adapting, using new technology, trying new methods and implementing fresh ideas. It’s vital to our long term success and we welcome it.

12. We like Diversity

We embrace different backgrounds, personalities, and skill levels. We treat everyone as equals with respect and care.

To sum it up: We treat others like we want to be treated.

We want to take the quality level of our videos to the next level so I’m proud to announce that Michael Poley has joined the TVM team full time as our first Video Editor. Hit him up on Twitter at twitter.com/michaelpoley.

He’s got some mad talent (check out his awesome interview submission below) and he’s a nice guy as well. Bonus!

Previously Nick and Jim had to produce, direct, edit and upload all their video. Now Michael will be taking care of that. Rock and roll.

Behind the scenes on Brickify

We hosted Brickify (see the announcement here if you missed it) it on Heroku.

The server immediately went down under the launch traffic. We logged in to the Heroku dashboard and upped the Dynos. The site instantly came back up. Cloud hosting FTW.

    Apart from that, congratulations on being awesome. The core values were interesting to read. I wish more companies had the same.

  3. Congratulations on going through the core values process – something we have just done ourselves and very useful for getting all of the company on the same path. Can’t help feeling you have way too many though! And some of them…being passionate about the web, embracing diversity etc, surely can be taken as read? Less is more!

Im currently studying webdesign and development in college and one day hope to open my own webdesign business, on every podcast or article about or by Carsonified or Think Vitamin, I have ever read I hear something that makes me say that one day I would like to run my business just like that, keep up the inspiring!!!!

    Posts like this are simultaneously uplifting and soul crushing. Uplifting because whomever works for TVM probably busts their ass, but is respected and treated well. Soul crushing because most jobs require the former without giving the latter.

    I’d be interested to read the why and what shaped your decisions to run TVM in this manner, with this philosophy.

      So to answer your question: I guess we decided to run the business like this because we think it’s the right thing to do. I worked with the team on developing our Core Values, so they come from our heart. I know that sounds a bit high-and-mighty but it’s the truth.

      We know that doing business right makes the world a bit better, and that’s important.
