There’s always a lot going on in the Ruby and Rails communities! Here’s some recent news from the communities:
- Jbuilder is a DSL for declaring JSON structures, created by DHH (creator of Rails). It lets you declaratively build your JSON output similarly to how Builder works for xml. It’s currently in the rails user account on GitHub and it may make an appearance in Rails 3.2.
- Rspec 2.8.0 rc1 has been released with some interesting additions to
rspec-mocks. Some of the highlights including running examples in random order, the ability to add custom profile options files, and being able to filter example groups from the command line.
- Finally, there’s been talk of converting the Ruby standard library to gems for Ruby 2.0. It’s mostly discussion at this point but that could be an interesting move as it would not require loading the whole standard library for every Ruby program. Additionally, updates to the standard library could come out much quicker than the typical Ruby interpreter release cycle.
