Inspired by Steve Job’s speech at Stanford University, 16-year-old Abdullah was determined to seek out a career he would love for the future. After much thought and research, Abdullah decided his passion for technology and computer programs could lead him towards a career in tech. But the next step forward meant he needed to learn to code.

Abdullah began searching for learning resources in his home country of Egypt but found they didn’t teach the skills he needed to prepare for a career on the Web. Then, Abdullah came across the Treehouse’s Stories Page. Inspired by the student stories from across the world, he signed up and started learning.

Now, a year later, Abdullah has fully embraced a love for coding. He’s confidently created his portfolio site, built his first app and is learning to develop games. But Abdullah is just getting started. Next, he plans to strengthen and expand on his skill set as part of the exciting and evolving tech industry and see where the future takes him.

We caught up with Abdullah to hear more about his learning experience and plans for the future.

Abdullah

What first drew you to the tech industry?

I found the video of Steve Jobs speech at Stanford University on YouTube and it changed my whole life. I started searching for things that I loved to do and tried to find a way to make a career out of them. I discovered that I really love technology and computer programs, so I wanted to find a way to make my own.

What were you doing when you first joined Treehouse & what encouraged you to learn with us?

I did nothing related to technology, but was searching for the best way to learn to code. The courses for computer programming in my country wouldn’t be able to help me create anything useful, but luckily I found Treehouse. I read the stories of successful Treehouse students on the Treehouse Stories Page and was so inspired by their achievements. That’s when I knew I wanted to start learning at Treehouse and aspired to join them one day.

Tell us a little about how your career has evolved since learning with Treehouse and the work you’re doing now.

When I joined Treehouse I knew very little bit about HTML and that was it. Since joining Treehouse, I’ve created a website, an Android app and am working on developing other apps.

What has the value of a Treehouse education meant to you?

A Treehouse education means a lot to me as without it I would be lost and wouldn’t have known how to start to follow my passion. It changed my whole life.

What are your plans for the future, and what’s up next on your learning path?

My plans for the future are to never stop learning and developing my skills and myself. I want to continue developing apps and games, so I’m focusing on Java and C#, but want to continue knowing a bit about everything to keep up with the evolving industry.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with new students?

The only advice that I want to give to new students is to follow their passion and to never stop learning. If you are able to achieve both of those you will not only change your life, you will change others as well and even change the world. Also, don’t forget to always have fun and to never give up.
