Lisa Sharpened Her Skills & Launched Her Own Freelance Web Design & Development Business
After years of envying friends working in the web industry, Lisa decided it was time to combine her passion for technology with a career change. Even with over 10 years of experience with HTML, Lisa found herself shocked by how outdated her knowledge was. So she decided she needed a learning resource she could rely on to update her skills and prepare her for the competitive and constantly changing web industry. With Treehouse, Lisa was able to learn how to confidently code in a variety of languages and began to take on client projects. As demand for her services grew, Lisa decided it was time to take things to the next level and launched her own freelance web design and development business, Jaffe Websites. Today, Lisa is inundated with new work, but still makes time to continue expanding and strengthening her skills to ensure she keeps up with the dynamic web industry.
We caught up with Lisa to chat about her learning experience and Jaffe Websites.
What first drew you to the web industry?
For as long as I can remember I have had a passion for all things that involve new technology – and with that came the Internet!
I would admire the work of others and even had friends who had chosen to study in the web based industry. After being in an office role (and envious!) for a number of years, I decided it was time for a change and that I was going to explore the world of web development to see where it could take me.
What work were you doing when you first joined Treehouse & what encouraged you to learn with us?
I had great familiarity with HTML from over 10 years ago and when I decided to revisit the web industry I was shocked at how much my current knowledge was outdated, and for lack of a better word . . . obsolete. I became focused on researching where web development was at in the world and what technologies and languages I needed to learn before I could really choose to change my current career path. After a number of hours on Youtube tutorials, I felt that the must be a better way to do this? Then I found Treehouse!
You recently launched your own freelance web design & development business Jaffe Websites. Tell us about what motivated you to start Jaffe Websites and the experience of launching your own business so far.
After hours or watching Treehouse tutorials, mainly WordPress and CSS (thanks, Zac and Guil) I learned to program responsive, well styled WordPress websites – and after doings some competitor research I felt confident enough to break into this industry as my work quality was beginning to exceed some of those around me. And then there was Jaffe Websites!
What has the value of a Treehouse education meant to you?
Treehouse has given me the knowledge and confidence to go out into the real world and deliver on what I promise – as well as producing work I am proud of and my client’s just love.
What are your plans for the future, and what’s up next on your learning path?
At the moment, I have been inundated with work and new projects just from word of mouth! However, I have already learned this industry is changing every day and as a developer I need to change with it! I plan on refining my PHP skills and evening diving into the world of Sass!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with new students who are aspiring web designers and developers?
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Sometimes it may seem hard, or even impossible but have patience with yourself, lots of coffee and a Team Treehouse subscription! : )
