You’ll notice a change to the comments here at Think Vitamin, and we’re really excited about it.

Comments are now sorted by the number of likes they’ve received. Previously they were sorted by newest at the top. Also, you can see who has liked the comment, so it’s not anonymous.

We feel this will reward those of you who put time and effort into your comments. It will also help the most interesting comments rise to the top.

We’re already very proud of the Think Vitamin community – you guys and gals are amazing. So this little tweak to the discussion model will drive the quality even higher.

Look forward to chatting more!

  2. Obviously, I am all for knocking down the “Great post…” comments to the bottom while raising comments that add more meaning and value to the original post to the top. I also understand the value of sorting by best rated in services like StackExchange, but does this not break the natural occuring dialogue (which is a chronological affair) and as a result your community of users.

  3. What are your views on threaded comments? How would the movement of comments by ‘liking’ work with that?

  4. Sorting comments/replies by quality is a very common and successful method of sorting the wheat from the chaff, as it were. It obviously works great on the StackExchange network of sites where it’s desirable to sort answers by quality, but also (in my opinion) works well on sites like Hacker News, where you can quickly discern the general sentiment of a group of people. It also helps reduce simple “+1” comments.

Regarding scaring away first-timers – I don’t think that’s going to be an issue. I do think it will somewhat discourage commenting on an older article, and will reward early responses, but I think that’s a good thing.

  5. Interesting approach, I don’t think I’ve seen any other blog that sorted comments by popularity like this. Are you concerned at all that doing so will scare away first-time commentators who might feel like their comment won’t have a chance to be seen?

    • Yes, it will scare some 1st time commentors but overall it should have a powerful long term benefit.
