This is Amber.

After navigating a particularly tough time in her life, she was living in transitional housing with her son Liam and trying to figure out her next step. She turned to Dress for Success in Portland, OR to help her prepare to re-enter the job market.

“I felt a little embarrassed at first, but I was treated so respectfully by the staff and volunteers. I never felt rushed or like I was ‘less than’ for being there.”

While she was picking out clothes, the staff invited her to an information session about our TalentPath program, a training solution for hiring and retaining engineers from underrepresented groups.

I decided to apply for the program and, now, just a few weeks later, I can still hardly believe that I made it onto the first Dress for Success TalentPath cohort! I didn’t think people like me – who come from checkered pasts like mine – got opportunities like this.”

“After the struggles in my life, I feel like I was given a second chance to have a life again – a fulfilling life. I feel like I’m a part of something really great, and like TalentPath could be a second chance for me to get a career that I’ve always wanted but was too intimidated to pursue.”

Amber is now working towards a Software Engineering Apprenticeship at the Portland offices of Acquia (acquia.com), a company specializing in managing digital customer experience.
