Room-scale VR is a category of virtual reality experiences that is designed to take place in a small area, about the size of a room. Room-scale VR is in contrast to seated or standing VR experiences, where the user puts on a VR headset and stays in one place. In a room-scale VR experience, users can safely walk around inside the confines of a “tracking volume”, which is the area of physical space in which the user can play.
In addition, motion controllers are also typically associated with room-scale VR, which allow users to naturally pick up objects with their hands and interact with the virtual world. Currently, only the HTC Vive supports room-scale VR, but support is coming for the Oculus Rift with the launch of the Oculus Touch controllers in December 2016.
