Our Mission at Treehouse is to teach skills that will help you achieve your dreams and change the world. For some of you that might be starting your own business, making a website to showcase your art, or building a web app that makes life easier for complete strangers! For others, that means developing a skill-set that will help you find a new job. The Treehouse Jobs Team is here to connect you with employers and provide other jobs related resources to get you the web design, web development or mobile development job that you want.
Message from the Jobs Team Leader to the Treehouse Community
What’s up Treehouse Members!
Some of you have seen my posts on our FB page or filled out the Jobs Team Survey (thanks!), but I figured it was time to introduce myself on the blog. My name is Michael Watson and I’ve joined the Treehouse team to help those of you who are looking for work find it. Who am I? Briefly, I got married a little less than a year ago and live with my wife and our puppies Marvin and Mila in Portland, OR. I’m from California, but have been abroad the past five years working and travelling throughout Australasia and Europe. I met so many amazing people, including my lovely wife, and got to visit places I never thought I’d go to. I know I’m super lucky for that. Naturally, it’s great to be back home in the States and even better to be working at Treehouse…enough about me though.
Whether you’re looking for full-time, freelance, or project work…my mission is to provide the resources you need to help you accomplish your career goals. Indeed, I’m here to help you in any way I can. Remember getting a job or internship can be a long process so don’t wait to get started with your search. If you’re a paying Treehouse member looking for a job, please get in touch with me! I would love to meet you and see how I can help.
Please keep in mind that I’m a one man team right now so I can’t promise I’ll find you a job right away or respond to each of you, but rest assured I’m working super hard to do so. Some of our members have already found jobs because of the skills they developed using Treehouse, and we want to keep on making that happen! One tip, don’t stop learning while you’re looking for work. Continue to practice and perfect your existing skills, and try to make time to learn others.
Last week we announced the Treehouse Independent Study Program on FB. If you are a paying Treehouse Gold member you have the opportunity to submit an independent study idea here, and if your project is selected you’ll be paired with one of our expert teachers and given one month to make your idea a reality. Among other things, this is a great opportunity to build something that demonstrates your ability to apply the skills you’ve learned on Treehouse. We’re piloting the program now so the first batch of independent studies will be limited to 20 members, but we’re planning to make this an ongoing feature of Treehouse so keep an eye out for future developments.
How can a member make it easier for me to help them? The process is still manual so when you contact me please include your resume and a link to your portfolio of work if you have one. Fill out the Jobs Team Survey. Also don’t forget to let me know what types of positions you are looking for and any unique circumstances (for example geographic limitations). It’s important that you remain realistic about the positions you want. Indeed, you have to be qualified for the roles you are looking for. If you want a design position, it’d make sense to have a portfolio of work to show off your skills. If you don’t have any background in mobile development and have not taken any of our courses on the subject, it doesn’t make sense to say that you’re looking for a job in mobile development!
I’m really excited about the resources we’re going to be rolling out over the next few months. Moreover, I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
All the best, Michael.
